Name: Alejandro (Alex) Cortez

Academic Coordinator & Lecturer

B.S. in Biology, UCR Class of 2002

M.S. in Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology, UCR, Class of 2009

Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, UCR

Being a Mexican immigrant and a first-generation college graduate makes me feel connected to our community and our students. UCR was my school of choice for both undergraduate (BS Biology, 2002) and graduate (MS EEOB, 2009) education.

I became an academic coordinator & lecturer in 2013. As such, I teach Biology 20 (Dynamic Genome) during the academic year and work with undergraduate researchers in the summer. I see myself as a facilitator in my students’ learning process and I love to see them succeed in and beyond the course. Regardless of their career path, they can benefit greatly from the hands-on laboratory experience that our program offers. Being a part of that experience makes my job so rewarding.
