When I was 5 years old, my mother and I left our old lives in Mexico to come to the United States for a better life and a greater chance at success. While growing up, I was raised by my mother, grandmother, and sister, all of whom were strong, independent women. They taught me that success is only given to those who are determined to overcome their challenges. During my time in high school, I had to face a lot of challenges because of my sexuality and the way I choose to express myself as a gay queer man. There were many times I felt out of place because I was different from those around me. I am happy that I will be attending UCR because of the acceptance and diversity of all people and the opportunities and resources that UCR provides to all students that wish to achieve success.
