Name: Candice Shanice DeGraft-Ackun

Major: B.A. in Dance

Class of 2018

I transferred to UCR determined to accomplish the goals I had set for myself. I knew I wanted to participate in the UCEAP study abroad program which ultimately became the highlight of my UCR academic experience. Not only was I able to go study in Ghana for a semester, but I produced an entire performing arts production and helped open the pathway to solidify my business.

The theme represented in the production was based on interculturalism through the use of the performing arts. The interactions and personal connections I developed during my program became a significant part of my academic journey and my future goals. I gained an even stronger passion for using the arts as a means of cultural exchange. I learned the importance of taking the time to understand people and how their culture affects their perspective on life.

My overall experience in Ghana helped me solidify my business goals in an impactful way by creating a deeper desire to provide a platform for my peers to understand the importance of interculturalism. Since returning, I started a company called Dare Generation (DARE Gen), a non-profit public benefit corporation, dedicated to fostering globally conscious artists who seek to enrich their communities and serve as activists through the arts.
