Name: Gustavo Jaime Correa
Major: 4th year, Electrical Engineering, University Honors
Class of 2019
Wow, three years have past and now I have one left to go...
I was born and raised not too far from UCR, in a city called Fontana, California. Growing up in a Mexican household, I’ve been fortunate to be around a loving family, friends that have become family, and new people I meet that I can now call friends. Looking back, there are three characteristics that have motivated my pursuits: my curiosity, my drive to create, and my role in helping people achieve great things.
I am proud to consider myself an engineer (in training), and grateful of having made use of many resources UCR provides to form my personal, technical, and professional foundation. This summer, I am close to completing an internship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as part of the 2018 MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP). I conduct research in the MIT Media Lab Responsive Environments group where I work under Professor Joe Paradiso and Dr. Nan Zhao. The project is titled “Mobile Mediated Atmospheres” which you can view here (https://www.gustavojcorrea.com/mit-media-lab).
When I was 17 and applying to colleges, I knew I wanted to become an engineer. However, I wasn’t sure what kind or for what reason, besides knowing I wanted to invent something. After all these years of changing majors (about 5-6 times), experiencing a wide array of internships/research experiences, and asking MANY questions, my next goal now is to become a roboticist. Never did I realize I wanted to become a roboticist prior to starting my undergraduate education. After my time here, I feel even more confident than I did 4 years ago, as I apply to the best schools and companies in the world that will help me pursue my future goals.
UC Riverside is a great place, where everyone should make use of the diversity and learn from everyone around. If you are in the position of not necessarily knowing what goals to pursue next, make use of everything around you and you’ll end up just fine at the end.
I will be graduating under University Honors with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 2019. Until then, please reach out to me for any advice, questions, or anything else.
