Name: Tramanh Truong

Year: 2nd Year

Major: Psychology

As a first generation student, studying at a university was intimidating to me. For the first time in my life, I couldn't ask my parents for advice since they also did not know all the answers. I was quite lost and unsure of myself at the beginning; but with the resources that UCR has provided, I have begun to realize my aspirations for after I graduate with my Bachelors degree. The large variety of research labs that UCR has in our psychology department has given me the opportunity to try out all of my interests in order to find the one for me. The ORBITS program, created specifically to cater to first generation students, has provided me with guidance for how to approach life after graduating; whether I decide to apply for a job or continue to grad school. The ORBITS program taught me skills and gave me practice on interviews and writing resumes. Being in ORBITS surrounded by other first generation students really made me feel less lost and nervous for the future. ORBITS also sets us up with mentors. Although my mentor does not work in my field of study, he serves as guidance for me on other aspects. For me, a first generation student, UCR has been more than just a source of education; it has taught me life skills as well given me mentorship.
