Name: An Son

Year: 3rd Year

Major: English, Creative Writing, Gender and Sexuality Studies

I had a bit of a rough start into college. My transition between high school and college also involved moving from adolescence into maturity. That summer before I started my first year here at UCR, my father had decided to leave our family without notice. That day I woke up to a phone call from my mom; she wanted me to know that this meant I’d be responsible for watching my sister while she was at work. This was the day after my high school graduation.

Soon enough it was time for me to focus on my course work here at school, even though my thoughts kept going back to my personal questions about what “family” meant. Looking for answers where there aren’t any is as futile as it sounds. Sometimes things just are. This was something that took time for me to gradually accept. But it’s alright. I’m writing this because I want whoever reading this to know that it’s okay. Not everyone has a nice start into college. Things can get better. I’m currently where I never thought I’d ever be. Years ago I would never have thought that I’d have two majors, let alone three. As I work through my final years at UCR, I cherish the people that helped me get this far. There’s no telling how long these people will stay in our lives. It’s important that we invest as much time as we can to love and appreciate all who matter to us.To the reader: I hope you’ve grown special bonds with those you’ve met from your time at UCR as well. And please remember that things can get better. It’s okay.
